About Prediabetes

A Serious Condition with a Powerful Opportunity to Improve Your Health

What Causes Prediabetes

Your body uses insulin to move sugar into your cells. When your cells stop responding normally, your body tries to produce more insulin to compensate. Over time, it becomes harder to keep blood sugar in a healthy range, which can lead to prediabetes.

Signs and Symptoms

Many people have prediabetes for years without obvious symptoms. Talk to your doctor about getting tested if you have risk factors such as:

  • Being overweight
  • Being age 45 or older
  • A parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  • Being physically active fewer than three times a week
  • A history of gestational diabetes
  • Giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Belonging to a higher-risk racial or ethnic group

Get Tested

You can get a simple blood sugar test from your doctor or take the CDC Prediabetes Risk Test:
